Managing Asthma in Primary Care: Understanding and Implementing the US Guidelines

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of primary care physicians interested in the diagnosis and management of asthma.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Articulate the current pathophysiologic concept of asthma and how it informs patient diagnosis, assessment, and management.
  • Apply the concepts of severity and control as described in the most recent Expert Panel Report (EPR-3) to patient diagnosis, assessment, and follow-up.
  • Prioritize integration of education, written asthma action plans, and self management into patient care.
  • Apply the concept of asthma’s heterogeneity to practice by individualizing treatment based on factors such as patient symptoms, precipitating factors, comorbid conditions, adherence, and goals.
  • Educate patients about the link between risk of death and use of, inhaled corticosteroids and short-acting ß-agonists to motivate adherence to long-term control therapy.

Instructions for Participation

To receive a CME certification of participation, participants should:

  • Read the entire publication, including the Continuing Medical Education Information.
  • Complete the posttest questions and evaluation form on pages 15 and 16 and mail or fax the evaluation form with answer key to Paradigm Medical Communications, LLC, 523 Route 303, Orangeburg, NY 10962; Fax: 845-398-5108.

A certificate of participation will be issued 4 to 6 weeks after receipt of a completed activity evaluation form and a completed posttest with a score of 70% or better.
